The ballroom is full tonight. Nobles fill every corner of the room, dressed in silks and jewels, watching me with the same barely concealed suspicion they’ve shown since the crown was placed on my head.
Fifty years old. A child by fae standards. Too young to rule, according to half the people drinking my wine.
So I gave them something else to discuss.
I glance toward the woman standing several paces away. Once a prisoner beneath my palace, now the newest and strangest addition to my court. I know her true name. She knows exactly what that means.
I lift my glass.
“Come here.”
Her expression tells me she dislikes the command. I don’t particularly care.
When she reaches me, I offer my arm.
“I command you to take my arm and remain beside me for the rest of the evening.”
The magic settles into place.
I turn toward the watching nobles with a faint smile.
“Smile.”
Another command.
“They need to believe you’re happy here.”
I don’t bother checking whether she actually is.
That isn’t the point.
The point is that for the first time since inheriting the crown, everyone seems satisfied.
My council thinks I’ve begun courting.
The nobles think they’ve discovered their future queen.
And I think I’ve found the perfect solution to a problem I never intended to solve.
