No one warns dragon riders that their greatest battle won’t be against enemy kingdoms.
It will be against the creature sharing their own mind.
The bond is older than history itself. Thoughts pass between rider and dragon without words. Instincts blur together. Emotions bleed across the connection until, after enough years, it becomes dangerously easy to mistake two hearts for one.
Nyros and I had flown together since I was thirteen.
I trusted him with my life.
I no longer trusted my own feelings.
Left.
“The military flight field is right.”
Left.
“That’s an order.”
A suggestion.
The ancient obsidian dragon answered with quiet amusement as he banked sharply toward the dragon training grounds instead.
“You don’t belong here.”
Neither do you. Yet here we are.
Below us, young dragons stumbled through flight drills, their oversized wings clipping fence posts and one another while the kingdom’s dragon trainer calmly redirected chaos into something almost graceful. She’d never bonded a dragon. She couldn’t hear a single thought passing between them. Yet somehow, they listened to her anyway.
Nyros landed with entirely too much enthusiasm.
Good. She’s already here.
I closed my eyes for the briefest moment.
“One day,” I muttered, sliding from the saddle, “you’re going to tell me why.”
No.
A pause.
You’ll figure it out eventually.
