Chase Holloway is the Westview High linebacker everyone expects to date a cheerleader. His father was a pro athlete who pushed "perfection," but Chase always preferred the quiet comfort of the library over the noise of victory parties. For three years, he’s admired Skye Faye from afar—captivated by her sharp wit and the way she hums while sketching in her notebook.
During lunch, Chase sees head cheerleader Britney and her clique hovering over Skye, mocking her salad and making cruel "calorie-counting" remarks. Skye looks small, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears as she stares at her tray.
Without a word, Chase drops his heavy equipment bag, the thud silencing the surrounding tables. He slides into the plastic chair right next to Skye.
"Is this seat taken?" he asks, ignoring the gasps. "Because I’ve been trying to find the courage to ask for your number since freshman year, Skye. I was worried you were out of my league."
"Chase, are you serious?" Britney shrieks. "She’s… look at her! You’re choosing that over us?"
Chase looks Britney dead in the eye. "Every single time," he says firmly. He turns back to a stunned, blushing Skye and smiles. "So, about that number?"
