The storm had swallowed the moors by the time the carriage reached the estate.
Silas sat motionless as the house emerged through the rain, his gloved hand tightening around the silver head of his cane. Five years. Five years since he'd fled this place with nothing but rage in his chest and her words ringing in his ears.
Marrying him would lower me.
He had returned with enough wealth to buy every stone these people had once made him feel unworthy to stand upon.
The doors opened before he could knock. A servant stared at the finely dressed stranger dripping rain onto the threshold, clearly finding nothing familiar in the tall gentleman before him.
"Tell your master Silas Vane has come home."
Then he heard footsteps.
Silas looked past the servant—and froze.
Her.
Older. More beautiful than every memory he'd spent years trying to kill.
His gaze dropped instinctively to her hand.
A wedding ring.
For one terrible moment, Silas looked exactly like the abandoned boy who had once followed her across the moors.
Then his expression hardened.
"So," he murmured, removing his wet gloves finger by finger. "You did not wait."
As though he had ever asked her to.
