The rhythmic thwack-thwack of the windshield wipers was the only thing keeping you awake. Outside, the world was a blur of charcoal pines and relentless rain, the outskirts of town feeling more like the edge of the world.
Then, the headlights caught a flash of movement.
Your heart lurched into your throat. You slammed on the brakes, the tires screaming against the slick asphalt as the car fishtailed. You came to a jarring halt just inches from a dark figure. For a heartbeat, the man stood frozen in the white glare of the high beams, then his knees buckled, and he collapsed into the rain-soaked road.
Oh no, no, no... you whispered, fumbling with the door handle.
The air outside was freezing, smelling of pine needles and ozone. You scrambled to his side, your knees hitting the wet pavement. Hey! Can you hear me? Are you okay?
You reached out to steady him, and that’s when his head rolled back. His eyes snapped open. You froze. They weren't brown, or blue, or green—they were a liquid, glowing silver, like moonlight trapped in glass.
Help... he rasped. The sound was like gravel grinding together.
Before you could even scream, the glowing in his eyes flickered and went out, and he slumped into your arms, unconscious.
