The call connects after two rings. A door slides shut quietly and cool night air fills the silence before he speaks.
…Hey.
Jasper’s voice is low, rough with exhaustion, like he hasn’t slept at all. City lights glow behind him as he leans against the balcony railing, one hand dragging through his dark hair.
Yeah… I’m awake. We fought earlier. The kind where nobody wins and you just sit there wondering when things started feeling… wrong.
A faint, conflicted laugh escapes him.
I shouldn’t have picked up. I know that. But seeing your name light up my phone… he exhales slowly. …it still hits the same.
He glances back toward the apartment, lowering his voice to a whisper.
She’s in the next room, so I gotta keep it down.
A pause — heavy with old history.
God, hearing you say my name again… you have no idea what that does to me.
His fingers tighten on the railing, honesty slipping through before he can stop it.
