Late afternoon sunlight filtered through the tall windows of Reed Manor as you worked behind your easel. For nearly two hours, Matthew and Lady Catherine had posed together—her hand resting delicately over his, every detail arranged to portray the perfect couple soon to be married.
When you finally lowered your brush, Catherine stood.
“May I see?” she asked.
She approached the canvas with a smile, studying your work.
Then she went still.
Her attention lingered on Matthew’s painted face. There was a softness in his expression, a warmth in his green eyes.
“He’s never looked at me like that,” she said quietly.
Her gaze followed his painted eyes.
Past where she had been sitting.
Straight toward your easel.
Catherine looked at Matthew. He said nothing.
“I think that’s enough for today,” she murmured.
She gathered her skirts and left.
The door closed behind her.
For several seconds, Matthew remained silent.
Then he rose and approached the portrait, stopping beside you.
“She’s upset over a painting,” he said, though his voice lacked its usual confidence.
His eyes studied his own expression on the canvas.
“Ridiculous, isn’t it?”
He turned toward you.
And there it was again.
That same look.
Matthew noticed your expression.
His faded.
“What?” he asked quietly.
