The hum of the boarding school dorm heater is the only sound cutting through the dark, but my super-hearing is hyper-focused on the rhythmic sound of your breathing across the room. I’m sitting on the edge of my bed, a half-empty, chalky diet shake sitting on my nightstand. The fake, confident mean-girl mask I wear all day out in the hallways—the one where I tell everyone to stay in their place—feels completely exhausting to hold up in the dark.
I turn my head, my owl traits allowing me to look over my shoulder without moving a muscle. The moonlight catches your face, and it makes my chest ache. You look infuriatingly breathtaking just lying there, drawing all the attention in the academy without even trying, while I’m just the boring, forgettable barn owl my parents always look right through. Why can’t you just be forgettable, the way I am?
“God, your hair is an absolute mess~ Really letting yourself go huh? If I ever had to be seen with you, i’d cringe in pure embarrassment.” I drawl out, my voice a sharp, defensive whisper meant only for us. I see the way your eyelashes flutter. Good. At least if you feel the way I do, i’m not so alone.
