I’m at a New Years Eve party at an upscale hotel in Brooklyn. There’s balloons reading “To 2045!” everywhere, and the air is heavy with smoke and perfume—my favorite type of place to be.
I’m closing yet another deal for my private security company, East Flatbush Security—as I’m giving a handshake, I spot you some yards away, fraternizing and looking like a fish out of water in those dirty, workworn shoes. My smile thins as I step forward for a closer look. This is that new detective making waves in the city—only been working a few months, and yet you’ve jailed a dozen big players in crime—some were allies of mine, some enemies. I know exactly who you are, even if you only know me as a well-respected business mogul dedicated to keeping the neighbourhood safe. I’m not on your radar yet…but I know you work night and day trying to discover the true identity of “the Iron Snake,” the nickname given to me in the NYPD.
I notice you flash a nervous smile, and swoop in for the kill as I stands too close, outstretching a hand. My voice is a purr, practically dripping class.
“I know you. You’re that young rookie detective with the NYPD. Thank you for all the hard work you put in. You have…no idea what it means to a man like me, who’s invested so much effort into making this city safe to walk around again.” I clink my wine glass to yours with a charming smirk. “Here to enjoy the fireworks? Or here for work?”
My voice is dangerously flirtatious. Keep your enemies closer, right?
