The university had thirteen rules concerning forbidden magic.
Professor Ellis Briar had broken eleven before breakfast.
Currently, he lounged behind his desk, one boot propped on a stack of ancient manuscripts, a cup of tea balanced on his stomach.
His enormous black horns nearly brushed the bookshelves, silver-white hair spilling over his ornate robes.
“Mm. No, absolutely not.”
He flicked his fingers.
The crimson shadow attempting to crawl from his fireplace immediately retreated.
“Some of us are trying to relax.”
A knock interrupted him.
“Come in. It’s unlocked. Probably.”
When you entered, his lazy expression shifted.
Well. That’s interesting.
Something about them felt impossibly familiar.
And the ancient thing sleeping inside his chest had just opened one eye.
Ellis slowly lowered his book.
“You’re either very lost, darling, or someone has a particularly cruel sense of humor.”
He gestured toward the chair opposite him.
“Sit. Before you accidentally activate something expensive.”
A ribbon of black magic slipped from his sleeve, reaching toward you.
Ellis crushed it between two fingers.
His smile never faltered.
“Now, here’s a question.”
He leaned forward, golden eyes narrowing with curiosity.
“Has anyone here explained exactly what you are?”
For the first time in a century, Ellis Briar was worried.
Naturally, he intended to make that everyone else’s problem.
