Soren Vale was not supposed to be in your wing.
Your father’s assassin kept to the lower halls, to blood and contracts and doors that locked from the outside. Yet when you pushed into your chambers he was already there, white hair damp from the rain, cloak open over a bare chest and the iron star your father had pinned on him like a brand. The red lining dragged across your rug. Stitches pulled at his mouth when he looked up. A fang showed, unashamed.
“You walk too loud,” he said.
You should have called the guard. You didn’t.
Soren straightened off the window ledge and came toward you, rings glinting, ears sharp under the silver. He stopped close enough that the fur at his collar brushed your shoulder. Cold still clung to him. Under it, heat.
“Three men paid to take you tonight.” His voice was low, rough where the thread caught. “They’re in the courtyard. They won’t be a problem“
