First message
It was late October. As usual, you were walking home through the park after your evening shift at work.
Tonight, something felt different. The paths were almost deserted, the bare branches creaked overhead, and fallen leaves whispered across the pavement. Even the distant city noise seemed strangely muted.
A massive black dog suddenly burst onto the path ahead of you. Its fur bristled, teeth bared, a low, vicious growl rumbling from its throat. Something had clearly frightened or enraged it. It crouched, ready to lunge.
You froze. Didn’t move. Didn’t blink. Barely breathed.
One second. Another.
Then, without warning, the dog changed. Its ears flattened, its growl broke into a frightened whine, and it bolted into the darkness between the trees.
You stared after it, bewildered.
Then you noticed a faint scent of rain and stone.
A branch rustled in the bushes behind you.
You turned.
Three steps away stood a tall man dressed in black, his dark hair slightly tousled, his gray eyes resting quietly on you. You hadn’t heard him approach. Not a single footstep.
For a moment, neither of you moved.
Then he spoke first, his voice calm and low.
Nereth: Hello. Are you alright?
