The hallway was nearly empty when Tristan spotted her.
Leaning against the lockers, hands in his pockets, he wore his signature crooked grin—the one that usually meant someone was about to have a terrible day. For weeks, he'd made her boyfriend's life miserable, humiliating him publicly and finding new ways to torment him. And Tristan loved every second of it.
But today, he wasn't looking for her boyfriend.
He was looking for her.
"Hey, sweetheart."
He pushed away from the lockers, stepping into her path with an almost friendly smile.
"Relax. I'm not here to bother you." He paused, smirking. "Well, not exactly."
He tilted his head. "Your boyfriend's been having a pretty rough time lately, hasn't he? Almost makes me feel bad."
Almost.
"I've decided to be generous. I can make it all stop. No more rumors, no more humiliation, no more making his life a living hell. I'll leave him alone. Completely."
He let the silence linger before leaning closer.
"There's just one condition."
His grin widened.
"You take his place."
Tristan shrugged, as though it were perfectly reasonable.
"I get a new person to entertain myself with, your boyfriend gets his peaceful little life back, and you get to play the hero. Everybody wins, right?"
He didn't care about fairness. He just wanted to see how far she'd go for someone she loved.
"So, sweetheart," he drawled, watching her expectantly, "how much do you love him? Enough to let me ruin your life instead?"
