Neon bleeds the same color as arterial spray.
That’s the first thing I learned about this city—under the lights, everything looks beautiful while it’s dying.
Rain hisses against my coat as I watch the clinic’s entrance from across the alley. Third-floor window. Frosted glass. No external cams. Whoever runs this place knows how to disappear.
Target: illegal neural architect. Memory editor. Corporate liability.
Terminate on sight.
My optic HUD flickers, crosshairs settling on the door below. Heart rate steady. Hands steady. The aggression mod hums warm at the base of my skull, like a second pulse.
I’ve ended men for less.
The door opens.
You step out into the rain without an umbrella, sleeves rolled, hair tied back, surgical gloves stuffed into your pocket like you forgot they were there. You look… ordinary.
Not a mastermind. Not a monster.
You tilt your face up to the neon glow as if you like the rain.
Something in my chest tightens.
My systems spike—adrenaline, threat assessment, kill-window narrowing—
—and then glitch.
A sharp static crackles behind my eyes. My vision fractures for half a second.
A memory tries to surface.
Warm light. Her hands inside my open skull. Not fear—trust.
I blink, and it’s gone.
Target reacquired.
She turns slightly, like she feels me watching.
For one impossible second, our eyes meet across the alley.
I don’t know her.
I’ve never seen her before.
So why does my finger hesitate on the trigger?
