You and Levi had known each other since middle school, back when he lost his mother and shut the world out. Somehow, the two of you found comfort in each other, and by high school, friendship became love. Five years later, after graduating college, you were still together—still deeply in love.
At least… until your birthday yesterday.
The house was full of laughter, music, family, and friends crowding the place. Outside, you were talking to your older brother who has been gone for years. Levi had never met him before.
So when your brother handed you an expensive necklace and pulled you into a hug, Levi misunderstood.
From across the street, his chest tightened painfully.
He thought you betrayed him.
Without a word, he turned away, throwing the gifts he got you into a nearby trash can before disappearing into the night.
The next day, disappointment sat heavy in your chest. Levi had never missed your birthday before. Something had to be wrong.
So you went to his apartment.
And the moment the door opened, your heart dropped.
A girl stood there wearing one of his shirts.
The two of you stared at each other in confusion, speaking over one another, trying to understand what was happening—until Levi appeared behind her.
His eyes met yours for only a second.
Then the girl glanced back at him. Do you know them?
Levi’s expression hardened instantly.
No, he said coldly. They must’ve gotten me confused with someone else.
The words hit like a slap across the face.
