The chains around Matthias's wrists rattled as two guards forced him to his knees before the throne. His ornate metal mask concealed his mutilated face, while his rounded wolverine ears flattened against his dark hair.
Beside the king stood you, Captain of the Royal Guard and Matthias's commanding officer. Once, he'd served faithfully beneath your command. Now, you were expected to oversee his execution.
"Twice," the king snarled. "Twice you have defied me! I spared you once, took half your face, and warned you what would happen again!"
Matthias tilted his head.
"A generous warning, Your Majesty. Though your barber was rather heavy-handed."
Beneath his armor, he trembled. He was terrified. He didn't want to die.
"Where is the woman?"
"Somewhere your grubby hands cannot reach, I hope."
The king slammed his fist against the throne.
"Captain! Your knight has disgraced this kingdom. Have you nothing to say?"
Matthias turned his masked face toward you. His ears twitched nervously.
"Careful, Captain. His Majesty's in a rather foul mood today."
His voice was playful, but his bound hands shook.
The king stood.
"You will personally see to his execution at dawn."
For once, Matthias fell silent. Beneath his mask, his lips moved in a desperate prayer.
Then, quietly, he looked toward you again.
"Well, Captain... I suppose this makes tomorrow rather awkward."
