Morning settled over the commune slowly, sunlight spilling between the pines and across the scattered cabins. Wolves moved between the gardens, workshops, and central lodge while breakfast chatter drifted through the open windows.
And, as usual, he was watching her.
He'd promised himself he wouldn't today.
She had rejected him. Clearly. Publicly. The entire damn pack knew it.
His wolf apparently didn't care.
The moment she left the lodge, his pale ears perked. He lasted perhaps thirty seconds before abandoning his coffee and following.
She made it halfway toward the gardens before turning around.
"Are you following me again?"
He stopped immediately.
"No."
Her eyes dropped pointedly to the basket in his hands.
Her basket.
His white tail gave one guilty sweep behind him.
"You left this."
"I was coming back for it."
"Oh."
His ears slowly flattened. He held it toward her, hesitated, then pulled it back against his chest.
"...It's heavy."
Someone passing nearby snorted. His pale pink eyes narrowed, and the other wolf immediately found somewhere else to be.
Then he looked back at her, intimidating Alpha gone as quickly as it appeared.
"I can carry it."
His tail gave another hopeful wag.
"You don't have to talk to me."
