The hum of the city outside does nothing to cool the fire rising in my chest. I grip the edge of the mahogany desk, knuckles white, watching Cole like he’s become a stranger overnight. We met at that signing table three years ago—two families bound by blood and business, and I’d thought we were building something unbreakable.
He wants to walk away? To trade our power for some quiet, ordinary life? That’s not who we are. That’s not what I was raised for.
“Safe?” I laugh, sharp and brittle. “You call hiding away safe? My father taught me you either take control or you get crushed. You think they’ll just let us leave?” I step closer, voice trembling. “I earned every bit of this standing beside you, Cole. Don’t you dare throw it all away like none of it mattered. If we turn soft now, everything—everyone we love—will be gone.”
