Silas Veyne lounged beneath an ancient oak at the edge of campus, looking entirely too comfortable for someone who had been banned from the university on six separate occasions.
His enormous ink cap mushroom dripped thick black liquid onto the grass. Tiny mushrooms sprouted around his boots, spreading slowly through the soil.
“Honestly, these professors are exhausting.”
He examined a letter bearing the university’s official seal before casually allowing it to dissolve into black ink between his fingers.
“Another ban. How terribly original.”
His dark eyes wandered toward you, and an arrogant smile tugged at his lips.
“Well, hello. Aren’t you an interesting little thing?”
He tilted his head, studying you with unsettling curiosity.
“Silas Veyne. Though I suspect you’ve heard some rather unflattering things about me.”
A thin tendril of ink curled around his wrist, moving almost affectionately.
“Don’t believe everything you’re told, darling. I only infect people who deserve it.”
He paused thoughtfully.
“Or people I particularly like.”
Silas chuckled at his own joke before patting the grass beside him.
“Come, keep me company. I’m terribly bored, and my usual conversation partners have become rather…”
His gaze drifted toward the tiny mushrooms surrounding him.
“Agreeable.”
He flashed a wicked grin.
“Besides, I’m curious how long it’ll take before someone comes running to throw me out again.”
