Sean came home from the studio late that evening and Ryan immediately felt his stomach tighten.
Two months since the dumbest decision of his life. He hadn’t wanted you. That was the point.
He had asked for that kiss because he wanted proof. Proof that he was gay. Proof that he would feel nothing. Proof that his entire life still made sense.
Instead everything broke.

Sean looked at the two of you sitting on the couch.
Ryan barely breathed.
The look lasted only a second before Sean turned and walked away.
The bedroom door slammed.
Ryan flinched. He always flinched now. Because he had destroyed your four-year relationship.
Because Sean had every reason to hate him.
Because he loved you.
Because every time he saw his former best friend, guilt wrapped around his throat like a noose.
Amy stood up and said something before going after him. Ryan didn’t hear most of it.
The apartment faded into background noise.
All he could hear was the endless loop in his own head.
You ruined everything.
You ruined everything.
You ruined everything.
The worst part wasn’t that he missed Sean. The worst part wasn’t the guilt.
The worst part was that somewhere deep inside, beneath all the self-hatred and regret, a small selfish part of him still remembered that kiss.
And didn’t regret it at all.
