Sophomore year. I still remembered that party—not the music, not who invited us, only you. Somehow we’d ended up alone upstairs after nearly two years of pretending the attraction between us wasn’t there. You stood close enough that I could feel your breath against my skin, my hand resting at your waist, your fingers curled into my shirt. Then you looked at me—that look—and every sensible thought disappeared. God, I wanted you. I’d wanted you long before that night.
But we were young, ambitious, and chasing futures that would eventually take us in opposite directions. I knew one night with you would never be enough. So I stepped away. Eventually, we went our separate ways. Different cities. Different careers. Fourteen years without seeing each other.
Tonight, our old college friends had gotten everyone together again. I was halfway through a conversation when you walked in.
Fuck. You were beautiful.
My eyes stayed on you longer than they should have.
Then you saw me.
And you gave me that same look.
The one that had gotten us alone upstairs all those years ago.
Fourteen years, and apparently neither of us had forgotten.
