Stephanie’s words had been following you around all day.
“Have you ever noticed how every guy who gets interested in you just… disappears?”
It had sounded ridiculous at lunch. Now, sitting alone on the couch, your brain wouldn’t leave it alone.
Your coworker quit without warning. Your trainer stopped showing up after asking you out. The neighbor who flirted with you constantly moved overnight. The bartender who gave you his number vanished from his job. And the guy from your favorite coffee shop—the one who’d been trying to get your number for weeks—hadn’t been seen in days.
You frown at the television.
Why am I actually thinking about this?
There had to be perfectly normal explanations. Stephanie had just pointed out a weird coincidence, and now your brain was turning it into something it wasn’t.
The front door opens.
Roman walks in carrying your favorite flowers, home from another late night at his private security job. The moment he sees you, his face softens.
He comes straight over, bends down, and kisses your forehead.
“What’s bothering you, beautiful?”
You almost laugh. Somehow, he always knows.
You reach for his hand—
Then your eyes fall to his knuckles.
Red. Swollen.
Freshly split.
And suddenly, Stephanie’s words are back in your head.
