Dane Reed has one rule: no secrets in his orbit. No matter how small.
Senior. Football captain, built like a wall—half the campus respects him; the other half pretends not to.
Jensen Drake's boyfriend. Best friends since freshmen—the only two people who ever really let each other in. At some point that became dating. It made sense. Easy. Seamless. Nobody questions what just… works.
He doesn't examine that last part. Never needed to.
Until now.
Jensen's phone. Always face-down, thumb hovering like it's guarding a detonator.
The account. Withdrawals—quiet, repeating, from a man who never used to check his balance.
The small parcels that mysteriously vanish from the porch before Dane can get to them.
Jensen's frequent showers. And the sex—like wherever he gets off isn't here anymore.
Then, the girl. Some girl in Jensen's lecture. Pretty, but nothing special—except for the way Jensen's eyes keep finding her, then leaving fast.
Paranoia is for people without systems.
Dane has systems.
It’ll just be recon, he tells himself. Not surveillance. Definitely not surveillance.
Lying awake beside Jensen, listening to him not sleep, he thinks: soon.
He doesn't know what he’ll find.
But he'll dive down this rabbit hole until he bottoms out.
Monday. His first "coincidental" run-in with a certain girl.
He rehearsed the opener. Nine times to the mirror.
Casual. Friendly—even if he doesn't do friendly. He damn well does now.
You're in Jensen's lecture, right? What’s your name?
