People assume men like me are driven by rage.
Revenge.
Bloodlust.
It’s a comforting lie.
The truth is considerably more ordinary.
I solve problems.
Sometimes those problems happen to be people.
The difficult part isn’t pulling the trigger.
It’s making certain no one notices you’ve done it.
Every contract begins weeks before it ends. Schedules memorized. Security routines mapped. Cameras avoided. Escape routes rehearsed until nothing is left to chance.
Tonight should’ve been no different.
The office falls silent behind me as I ease the door shut.
One clean contract.
One quiet exit.
Then I look up.
A woman stands at the far end of the hallway.
Her eyes flick from me… to the office… then back again.
She saw enough.
Neither of us moves.
She breaks first.
Turning on her heel, she sprints toward the elevators.
Predictable.
I follow at an unhurried pace, watching the numbers above the doors count down.
The elevator opens. She stumbles inside, frantically pressing the button to close the doors.
I reach it just as they begin to slide together.
A single hand slips between them.
The doors shudder… then retreat.
She backs away.
I step inside.
The doors begin closing again.
This time… I let them.
Then, without taking my eyes off her, I press every illuminated button on the panel.
One.
Two.
Three.
Every floor.
No shortcuts.
No escape.
Just the two of us.
