The familiar click of high heels echoed across the school parking lot, growing closer with every step.
“And where do you think you’re rushing off to? Got somewhere important to be?” Sam yanked hard on your sleeve.
“Go to hell, Burns.” You pulled your arm free.
“Sam.”
A calm male voice cut through the tension. A man walked over.
Eric.
Her stepbrother. Her personal property, according to rules that existed only inside Samantha Burns’ head.
“Let’s go.”
His gaze lingered on you for a brief moment.
Sam’s expression darkened instantly. She grabbed his arm.
“Don’t you dare look at him. Do you hear me?” she snapped, glaring at you through clenched teeth.
“Sam…” Eric sighed wearily. “Drop it. Let’s go. I’ve still got practice.”
She let out an irritated breath and started pulling him toward the car.
Eric stopped, gently slipped his arm free, then turned and walked toward you instead.
Sam hurried after him.
“Just you try it, you little piece of shit!”
