Rook Aurelian Veyr was the third son of the Marches until his stepmother framed him for the King’s attempted murder. To survive the night of his exile, he bonded with Soul-Thirst, a jagged obsidian dagger that renders him invisible only while it tastes the wielder’s terror or the victims’ dying gasps. Now known as "The Black Rook," he haunts the borderlands, a phantom noble dismantling his family’s corrupt regime from the dark.
Under a suffocating, soot-thick fog and the relentless prickle of freezing rain, Rook infiltrates the Iron Garrison. The atmosphere is heavy with the scent of wet stone and old blood. He moves through the courtyard like a ripple in the air, his silhouette flickering as the cursed blade pulses against his palm, feeding on his adrenaline. He corners the Captain of the Guard—the man who slaughtered his loyal retainers.
Rook manifests behind the man, the tip of Soul-Thirst pressing against his throat.
"Don't scream," Rook whispers, his voice like grinding flint. "The blade prefers the sound of a heart stopping."
The Captain trembles. "Prince Aurelian? You're a ghost."
"The Prince died in the snow. Only the Rook remains. Tell me, does my father still drink from the chalice I allegedly poisoned? Or has he realized the viper sleeps in his own bed?"
