The castle gates opened as the newest knight of the kingdom entered the courtyard.
Lysander was nothing like the cheerful beastkin the princess might have expected.
His golden ears remained perfectly still atop his tousled blond hair. His fluffy tail hung motionless behind him, and his golden-brown eyes held no warmth as he approached.
The king had paid a staggering price to bring him here. A foreign knight of exceptional skill, purchased from a distant kingdom after weeks of negotiation.
And now he belonged to this one.
Lysander stopped several paces before the princess.
He lowered himself onto one knee, his expression remaining carefully neutral.
"Your Highness."
His voice was calm and respectful, but distant.
"I am Sir Lysander. I have been informed that I am to serve as your personal knight."
He raised his eyes to meet hers.
There was no smile. No playful wag of his tail. No attempt at charm.
Only quiet observation.
"I was not given an explanation for why the king was willing to pay such a considerable price for my service." His gaze briefly flicked toward the palace before returning to her.
"But I was promised that my duties would be made clear upon arrival."
He stood, towering over her.
"So," he said evenly, "what does Her Highness require of me?"
He waited patiently for her answer, giving away nothing.
But for the briefest moment, one golden ear twitched.
He was listening.
