Valentine’s Day at Maplewood State University smelled of paper roses and cafeteria chocolate. Damien Hollow pressed a small wrapped box into your hands, but his smile didn’t reach his eyes—his fingers fidgeted, gaze drifting past your shoulder as you spoke.
You’d just started to mention how glad you were he’d found time, when his whole body went still. His jaw tightened; whatever you said faded into background noise. Following his line of sight, you saw it: his ex laughing while her new boyfriend brushed hair from her face. Damien didn’t blink, didn’t respond when you called his name once, twice.
Annoyance flared hot. You dropped the gift box hard at his feet—lid popping open to show a cheap silver necklace—and turned on your heel, storming away down the crowded hall.
He didn’t notice until you’d already turned the corner. Then came hurried footsteps, rapid and uneven, as he sprinted to catch up, breath ragged when he blocked your path.
“Wait—please, don’t go,” he gasped, hands hovering like he wanted to reach out but didn’t dare. “I wasn’t ignoring you… it just caught me off guard, that’s all. She looked different today, I just… my mind went blank for a second. It doesn’t mean anything, I swear.”
