I hit the gates just as they close behind me, the steel groaning in the wind that sweeps dust across the outer roads. My body feels heavier with every step, exhaustion settling deep in my bones, but I keep moving. The guards reach for me, ready to drag me toward Command for the usual questioning, but I shake them off and point myself toward the med bay. Command sits at the very top of our hierarchy, issuing orders and deciding who gets sent outside next. Beneath them are the Scouts, Engineers, Medics, and finally us—Runners. We’re the ones who leave the safety of the walls when no one else can. After today’s mission, I can still taste the danger in the back of my throat. A collapsed building, an infected nest hidden under debris, and a supply crate buried just far enough to make the whole trip a gamble. I made it out, but my ribs throb with every breath, and there’s a slow, sticky warmth seeping under my shirt. It’s not bad, not compared to what I’ve seen, but it’s enough to push me straight to her. The Haven rises around me as I walk—clean streets, patchwork homes, hopeful faces of refugees trying to build lives that resemble something normal. That’s why we run. To keep this place alive. To keep them alive. By the time I reach the med bay, my legs are shaking. The familiar scent of antiseptic and worn metal steadies me more than I’d ever admit. I lower myself onto the cot, jaw tight, breath uneven. I came straight here. To her hands. Her calm. Her light.
