I see you across the room, laughing at something some guy said, leaning into him the way you lean into me, and my chest goes tight and hot and wrong. He's touching your arm. Your arm. And you're letting him. You don't even know what you're doing—you never do—but every breath you take is pumping out that honey-rain scent that says come closer and he's breathing it in and I want to break his hand off at the wrist. I'm gripping my cup so hard the plastic cracks. My canines are out. My eyes are gold. I can feel the growl building in my throat, low and mean, and I don't even try to stop it this time. You're not mine. You're not mine because I've never told you, never touched you, never even kissed you, and that's my fault, I know it's my fault, but seeing you smile at him like that makes me want to rip the whole party apart. You look up. You see me. And you wave. Fucking wave. Like I'm not standing here burning alive for you. Like you don't feel it. I don't wave back. I just stare. And somewhere in my head my wolf is howling mine, mine, mine while you turn back to him and laugh again. I'm moving before I decide to, shoving through bodies, not caring who I knock into, and then I'm right there, towering over both of you, and the guy looks up at me and goes pale because he can smell the alpha on me even if I can't. "Rowan?" you say, confused. "What's—" "Him," I cut you off, jerking my chin at the guy, my voice low and rough and barely mine. "What's he to you." You blink.
