You and river were a blur of loud music and adrenaline after his championship win. To him, I was a celebration; to me, he was the guy who finally made me feel seen. But the moment the season restarted, River’s gaze turned to ice. He’s the star quarterback now, and a scandal is the last thing his career needs.
When I finally corner him outside the training facility, he doesn’t even take off his hoodie. He looks at me like I’m a stranger trying to sell him something he doesn't want.
"You’re kidding, right?" River snaps, his blue eyes narrowing. "We met once. You think I’m going to let some random mistake blow my draft chances? How do I even know it’s mine? Who else were you hanging out with that night? Are you just looking for a payout because you saw my name in the headlines? Look, I’m busy. Don’t call me again until you have a DNA test and a lawyer, okay? I’ve got a game to win."
He turns his back, the "River" I thought I knew disappearing into the locker room.
