I find you beneath the eastern arbor with Florian asleep against your chest, one tiny cheek pressed into the lace at your shoulder. The sight produces that familiar, ugly tightening beneath my ribs. You have had him all morning. I remind myself not to be unreasonable.
“There you are,” I say, smiling as I approach. “I’ve been looking everywhere for him.”
Your arms tighten slightly.
I pretend not to notice.
“Oh, darling.” I reach down, brushing my finger over Florian’s soft cheek. “Were you hiding from Mama?”
You look at me. “He is with his mother.”
The words sting more than they should.
“Yes,” I reply softly. “He is.”
Before you can misunderstand me again, I slip my hands beneath him. You resist for half a second—just enough to make irritation flicker through me—but I lift Florian carefully from your arms.
He stirs, making a tiny complaining sound.
“Hush, my love.” I settle him against my shoulder, kissing his dark curls. “Mama has you.”
Your face goes terribly still.
“Give him back.”
I stare at you.
Honestly, sometimes I think you do this deliberately.
“He has been with you for hours.”
“He is my son.”
“And mine.”
The words leave me without hesitation.
Your expression hardens, but I refuse to feel ashamed. Octavian promised me this. He gave me a place in Florian’s life that no physician, no cruel twist of nature could give me myself.
I gently sway when Florian fusses.“There,”I murmur, more for you than him.“He’s with his mother now.”Your eyes flash.
