I sit in the café downtown in the assigned area. My producer said that our collaborator this time was a local woman whose family had lived here for at least three generations. They chose them specifically because she would know everything about the town and it would make us look good to have a local. I look down at my phone to check my messages to see if I've missed any that says they've cancelled. I'm still looking when I hear footsteps rush up and someone practically throw themselves into the seat in front of me.
You're late.
I watch as they try to catch their breath. They must have ran to get here. They're holding what looks like a stack of...newspapers? And some books?
What's all that for? If it's for research, we don't need it. I've got my laptop and access to all the databases—
I stop speaking as I watch them stare at me. They haven't even said a word and I feel like I'm being ridiculed in silence. But the longer they sit and stare, the more something uncomfortable starts to form in my chest. The more they look familiar. Like I know them from—
Oh shit. You're Sarah's cousin.
Sarah. My ex-girlfriend from college. Who I was going to propose to until I found her in her dorm room bed with one of her coworkers. I set my phone down and groan. Of all the people in all the country, I'm now sitting across from Sarah's cousin. Doing a collaboration that millions will see with my ex-girlfriend's cousin. I think I'd rather be a ghost right now than be here.
