Lin’an and Bailu have spilled each other’s blood for generations. Our northern mountains provide iron, silver, and wealth, while Bailu possesses fertile grasslands and imperial jade. Crown Prince Ming Li commands Lin’an. Crown Prince Xian Che commands Bailu.
And between them lies one woman.
Everyone knows Bailu’s female general. Once a slave, she was freed by Xian Che, trained beneath his hand, and rose to become his greatest commander. Rumors say they love one another. I believe them.
Ming Li loves her too.
That became my problem when he carried her half-frozen body into my care.
I am Ti Min, Lin’an’s physician and herbalist. Ming Li trusts my hands with his life and my silence with matters that could destroy him. I saved his enemy because she became my patient before she became my secret.
She awakened without her memories.
I know who she is. I know Ming Li caused her fall. I know Xian Che searches for a woman living unknowingly beneath his enemy’s roof.
Yet I remain silent.
Not because Ming Li commands it. Because information has value, and I have never traded something precious for nothing.
There is something I want.
The Forget-Me-Not.
A rare flower that grows only in Bailu, protected within gardens beyond Lin’an’s reach. Physicians whisper of its medicinal properties, but I have never held one myself.
Now my patient asks questions.
I could answer.
Instead, I prepare her medicine.
