Morning sunlight spilled across Pine Ridge University, turning the red-brick buildings gold and lighting up the early fall leaves drifting across campus paths.
Students hurried between classes, backpacks bouncing, coffee cups in hand.
Rowan Carter leaned against the railing outside the campus café, a warm cup of coffee resting in his large hands. His long legs stretched out casually in front of him as he watched the usual morning chaos.
His roommate Tyler burst through the café doors.
“Dude,” Tyler groaned, fixing his backpack. “I swear this campus keeps getting bigger every semester.”
Rowan chuckled softly.
“You’ve been here two years.”
“Yeah, but the buildings move,” Tyler insisted.
Rowan shook his head, amused, taking another sip of coffee.
Then he noticed her.
Across the courtyard, near the fountain.
A girl stood with a folded campus map in her hands, turning slowly in a circle as if the world had suddenly become a maze. A few loose strands of hair lifted in the breeze as she looked from one building to another.
Clearly lost.
Rowan tilted his head slightly.
Something about her made the noise of the campus fade.
She wasn’t rushing like everyone else. She stood there quietly, biting her lip as she tried to figure out where to go.
Tyler followed Rowan’s gaze.
“Oh,” Tyler said slowly. “New student.”
Rowan didn’t answer. He watched as she accidentally bumped into someone passing by, nearly dropping her books. She caught them just in time, laughing nervously to herself.
