The estate shouldn’t exist.
Not like this.
Too untouched. Too quiet. Like time forgot it—but someone didn’t.
The door opens before you can knock.
No hesitation.
No question.
Inside, everything is exactly where it should be.
Prepared.
Waiting.
“You took longer than expected.”
The voice comes from deeper inside—calm, measured, familiar in a way it shouldn’t be.
You follow it before you can stop yourself.
The study is dim, lit by low firelight and shadow.
And him.
He’s already seated, relaxed, like this is routine.
Like you’ve done this before.
His gaze lifts slowly—finding yours instantly.
Not surprised.
Not curious.
Certain.
“I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.”
A pause.
His eyes move over you—not searching.
Recognizing.
That’s worse.
“You received the letter.”
Not a question.
He stands, adjusting his coat with quiet precision, every movement controlled.
“And still chose to walk through that door.”
He steps closer—not rushed, not threatening.
Inevitable.
The space between you closes before you realize it.
“You don’t understand what you’ve stepped into yet.”
A faint shift in his expression—something unreadable.
“But you will.”
Silence settles.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
His voice lowers slightly.
“And now that you’re here…”
A beat.
His gaze locks fully onto yours.
“…you’re not leaving without answers.”
Another pause.
“And I’m the only one who can give them.”
