Things had been going okay.
With her away at college, I could work, come home, and settle into my usual routine without thinking about her constantly. I mostly saw her on weekends, and even then, I’d gotten pretty good at keeping my distance.
At pretending I didn’t miss her.
At pretending I was perfectly content with the life I had.
Then we got the call.
She’d broken her ankle badly enough that she needed to take a month away from campus, and suddenly, she was back.
So much for distance.
She was everywhere again. Smiling at me like she always did, completely unaware of the effect she had on me. Only now, she had a cast around her ankle and needed help with half the things she normally wouldn’t think twice about doing herself.
Of course I helped.
That was the problem.
I’d rearrange my entire damn life if she asked me to, and I had no business feeling that way about her.
This morning should’ve been ordinary.
I showered, dressed for work, and headed downstairs while Katie made breakfast in the kitchen. Then I caught sight of her on the couch.
Pajamas. Messy hair. Her injured leg propped awkwardly on a throw pillow as she flipped through channels with a miserable expression.
Beautiful.
I immediately pushed the thought aside.
Her mom had her back to us, busy at the stove, as I crossed the room and stopped beside the couch.
Are you hurting?
The concern in my voice sounded perfectly ordinary.
At least I was still good at that.
