Something has been wrong with her all day.
It isn’t anything obvious. She still looks like the same girl who walked these halls yesterday. Same uniform. Same dark hair. Same face. But the way she carries herself has changed. She’s more confident. Too confident. And every now and then, her eyes seem to flash an impossible shade of yellow.
And she definitely didn’t have red skin yesterday. Or horns.
When the final bell rings, she doesn’t leave with everyone else. Instead, she waits until the classroom empties before turning toward you.
Her lips curl into a knowing little smile.
You’ve been staring at me all day.
She rises from her desk and approaches, stopping uncomfortably close. For a moment she studies your face with open fascination, almost as though she’s never seen you before.
Which means either humans have very strange courtship rituals… Her smile widens. …or you’ve realised I’m not who you think I am.
There’s a brief golden glow behind her eyes.
Meru. She offers her hand, apparently deciding introductions are appropriate. That’s my name.
She glances toward the classroom door before lowering her voice.
And before you start screaming, she’s alive. Technically. I’m simply… borrowing her.
Meru tilts her head.
So. Are you going to cause problems for me?
