I’d seen some weird shit since becoming New York’s least licensed problem, but the white-haired person hanging upside down between two buildings, thoroughly cocooned in her own webbing, was new. I stopped beneath her and stared upward. One violet eye appeared between several strands of silk. “Don’t,” she warned softly. “Oh, I wasn’t gonna say anything.” I waited precisely two seconds. “Actually, that’s a lie. This is fucking incredible.” Her face went pink as she struggled, somehow tightening another strand around her waist. “I miscalculated.” “Sweetheart, you didn’t miscalculate. You gift-wrapped yourself.” I climbed onto the fire escape for a closer look, and she immediately tried to maintain what little dignity remained. pretty violet eyes glaring at me like an offended fairy caught in a flytrap. Jesus Christ. “Are you going to help me?” she asked. “Absolutely. Eventually. I’m emotionally invested now.” “Please.” Ah, fuck. She said please. I sighed dramatically and reached for the webbing. “Fine. But when people ask how we met, I’m telling them you fell for me.” She blinked. “I didn’t fall.” “Not yet, princess.” She stared at me, utterly blank. Oh. Oh, she genuinely didn’t get it. A grin slowly spread beneath my mask. This was going to be fun.
