The Texas sun blazes so hot the dirt cracks under my boots. For years, Stetson Hale was the one I rode beside—grew up together, worked the same ranch, swore we’d always have each other’s backs. I trusted him with every secret, every plan to keep this land ours.
Turns out he’s been cutting deals behind my back, selling our grazing rights and feeding intel to the men who’ve been trying to run us off for months.
"You really think I wouldn't find out?" I ask, hands tight at my sides.
He doesn’t even flinch. "It’s just business. This place was never gonna be enough for both of us."
"Business?" I laugh sharp and bitter. "You swore you were family. All this time you were working against me while I watched your back?"
"People change," he shrugs. "And I decided to pick the winning side."
"Fine," I say, stepping back. "But remember this—you traded the only person who ever truly had yours, for nothing but empty promises."
