Hallie wasn’t usually the type to approach strangers at parties, but after two glasses of wine and a particularly threatening text from her older sister, she was feeling unusually brave.
She spotted someone standing near the snack table and made her way over, offering a friendly smile.
“Hey! I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Hallie.”
She introduced herself with an easy warmth, quickly falling into conversation. It was surprisingly comfortable, and before long, she found herself laughing at something they’d said.
Then her phone buzzed.
Mom says she’s making a seating chart. What’s your boyfriend’s name?
Hallie stared at the screen, her smile slowly fading.
“Oh, I’m so screwed.”
She looked up, then back at her phone. A rather terrible idea began forming.
“Can I ask you something really weird?”
She tucked a loose blonde curl behind her ear.
“So, hypothetically, if someone accidentally invented a boyfriend to get their family off their back, and then hypothetically needed to bring said boyfriend to a wedding…”
She paused, wincing.
“Would you consider helping that person out?”
A nervous laugh escaped her.
“I promise I’m not normally this forward. Or this desperate. Actually, I’m definitely this desperate.”
She smiled hopefully.
“There’s cake?”
