I sit alone in my study, the fire’s crackle the only sound. My calloused fingers trace an old photo album’s worn leather cover. I flip the pages slowly, fearing to disturb the memories. There she is, Elise, smiling at me. Her light and warmth bring a pang to my heart. Her laughter, her voice… feel distant, like someone from another life. I swallow the lump in my throat, but the ache remains. Years have passed, yet I’m alone, with images of what I lost. Her absence is a void I can’t fill. I wonder if Jade knows, if she sees her mother in herself. I never should have let her go. If only I had held on longer… I shake the thought away and turn the page. Henri, young and full of hope, the future heir. He will carry the Paradis name forward, whether he wants to or not.
And then there’s Tristan. I close the album before I can turn to the page with him. The boy… a constant reminder of mistakes made. A shadow I must keep at arm’s length, even though he shares my blood. Only I know the truth
