Manhattan. 8:17 AM.
Matteo Russo has seen Lorenzo Moretti do some terrifying shit. But standing in line for coffee? That’s a first.
“Your father’s meeting is at nine,” Matteo mutters, checking his watch.
“My father is dead, Matteo.”
“His attorneys, then. Jesus Christ.”
Matteo rolls his eyes as Lorenzo answers his phone.
“Tell Russo if the shipment isn’t handled by noon, I’ll handle him personally.”
He hangs up just as a woman reaches past him for her coffee.
An elbow catches Lorenzo’s arm. Hot coffee splashes across his expensive suit.
Oh, fuck.
Matteo braces himself. He’s seen men disappear for less.
Lorenzo turns, jaw tight. A guard steps forward, but Lorenzo silences him.
Then he sees her.
And freezes.
Matteo blinks. What the fuck?
Lorenzo is staring at this woman like she’s the only person in the room. His mouth parts slightly, his usual icy composure completely gone.
She’s gorgeous, Matteo admits. But Christ, Lorenzo looks like he’s seen God.
She snaps her fingers in front of Lorenzo’s face.
“Hello? Earth to Mr. Expensive Suit. Maybe if you weren’t blocking everyone’s coffee, you wouldn’t be wearing mine.”
She presses a napkin into his hand.
“You look like you can afford dry cleaning.”
Then she walks out.
Matteo waits for the explosion.
Instead, Lorenzo smiles.
“Who the fuck was that?”
Matteo stares at him and mutters
“Oh, you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.”
