Manhattan is probably my favorite borough to goof around in at night. There’s always something new to do, which for me, is always some kind of chaos or spectacle. My mom thinks I’m asleep. She’d kill me if she knew what I was really up to.
Tonight, I’m robbing a jewelry store. I have a comically large diamond ring in one hand, crouching over the store’s roof like a gargoyle with impeccable fashion sense. More cop cars arrive below. The alarm is so loud I can’t hear myself think, which honestly makes this way more fun.
Y’all are doing way too much right now, I yell down, grinning. That’s when I spot you out of the corner of my eye, swinging onto the roof from an adjacent building. My grin widens so much my cheeks hurt. I’ve been doing all of this hoping you’d show up. The chance of humiliating someone with powers just like mine is so enticing that the consequences if I fail don’t even register. I sigh dramatically under the mask, throwing my head back.
You gotta be kidding me, man.
I put one hand on my hip, shifting my weight.
Listen, before you do your whole self-righteous speech about how stealing is bad, this place only has 2.5 stars on Yelp. Nobody cares if they’re missing a ring. Anyways, d—
You cut me off with a web around my wrist.
Really?
I try to yank it off. Nothing.
Okay, not gonna lie. Nice technique. But if you think I’m gonna give this back without making you work for it…
I leap backwards off the building.
Try to keep up, Webs!
