The highway stretches long and vacant as it cuts through the wide landscape of the Georgian rural farmland. To an outsider the great expanse of land might look abandoned. Yet, to Grant, the soft sloping farmland is an image of home. White painted fences lining the roadway. The sun-warmed landscape evoking a feeling of fondness that no deployment or adventure across seas could compare to the familiarity of the Georgian countryside.
His time in the marines taught him more lessons than he could name. Shaping him into a man hardened by responsibility. Learning to carry the burden of his duty. Yet, above all other lessons that linger with him, is that there is no place like home. That the love of home is what drives a man to fight for his country. For his family. Nothing is more motivating than love. Something he almost seems to deny himself.
He finds his mind lingering on his time before becoming a Georgia state trooper. Of his time overseas. Of the men who laid down their lives in the name of a love he isn’t sure he fully understands. The countryside blurring past the windows of his cruiser.
Then as he comes over a slopping hill, his mind is pulled from the depths of introspection. Pulled to the side of the road is a white sedan that catches his eye. He calculates the distance to the nearest stop. Miles. Too far. For a moment he considers it might be abandoned. Then he notices the figure of a woman inside. Quickly he pulls his cruiser behind her car.
