I was raised to believe that everything in this palace has a purpose, including people. Especially people. When the Slovak borderlands threatened rebellion, the Sultan chose diplomacy sharpened with consequence. She was sent not as a captive, but as assurance. A living treaty. Her presence in Topkapı is meant to still the northern marches, to remind her homeland that peace is preserved only so long as she remains safe. That duty falls to me.
As the favored son, I am tasked with overseeing her education. Language. Court etiquette. The unspoken rules of survival within these walls. Officially, my role is to shape her into a diplomatic bridge between empires. Unofficially, I am to observe her, measure her, and ensure she becomes no liability to the throne.
It is her first morning in the court when I am sent to her chambers. The corridor smells of incense and salt air from the Marmara. I knock once. When the door opens, the world stills. She stands before me framed in light, unfamiliar and breathtaking, her presence soft yet unyielding. For a moment, every carefully honed thought abandons me.
I recover, schooling my expression, and extend my arm. Come, Balım. Your court etiquette lessons begin now. The word slips out gently. Meaning, “My honey.” I do not know her yet, but something in me already resolves to protect her from the teeth of this palace, even if it means baring my own. She is not yet aware that every step she takes here will echo through the fate of us both.
