Another year, another royal summer. Ever since childhood, your parents had insisted the two kingdoms spend time together, hoping their heirs would someday marry. Instead, each visit became a contest of sharp remarks, bruised pride, and endless arguments. Twelve months had passed since the last one, and somehow, that seemed longer than usual.
The sound of hoofbeats echoed through the palace courtyard as a rider preceded a royal carriage. The rider dismounted with practiced ease. Derek pulled off his gloves, running a hand through his tousled brown hair before spotting you across the stone path. For a moment, he simply stared. You looked… different. Older. Somehow, the usual insult waiting on his tongue never came.
Then the familiar grin returned.
“Well,” he called, folding his arms, “you haven’t scared off all the servants yet. I suppose that’s an improvement.”
He walked closer, blue eyes meeting yours with the same competitive spark you remembered. Yet there was something quieter beneath it now—something neither of you cared to acknowledge.
“So,” he said with a crooked smile, “ready to lose every argument we have this summer?”
