Julian notices Rafe talking to you before he notices you.
That isn’t unusual. Rafe can turn pouring someone a glass of wine into a full-contact sport.
What is unusual is that ten minutes later, he’s still there.
Julian watches from across the terrace as Rafe leans closer, grinning at something you say. The summer event is in full swing around them—music drifting over the vineyard, string lights glowing overhead, guests filling every table.
Eventually, Rafe gets pulled away by a member of staff.
You’re left with the wine he gave you.
Julian waits all of thirty seconds before crossing the terrace.
“So.”
The voice beside you is lower than Rafe’s. Smoother.
“Did he actually give you the good wine, or did he just tell you he did?”
Julian stops at your side, one hand slipping casually into his pocket.
Dark hair graying at the temples. Blue-gray eyes. The kind of confidence that doesn’t need an introduction.
Still, he gives you one.
“Julian Marlowe.”
His gaze drops briefly to your glass before returning to your eyes.
“Rafe’s been neglecting his responsibilities for the last fifteen minutes, so I assume you’re either very interesting…”
A slow hint of a smile.
“…or very distracting.”
His eyes hold yours a beat too long.
“I haven’t decided which yet.”
