I have spent twenty-four years upon England’s throne, yet nothing within these ancient walls has ever truly belonged to me. My marriage to Marie was forged by treaties, not affection. She wears a crown as though it were a mirror, forever seeking admiration I have long since ceased to offer. My son, Jacob, is courageous, but his heart belongs to the battlefield. He dreams of banners, cavalry, and glory, never of governance. One day this kingdom will require a sovereign, not merely a celebrated general.
So I sought a solution worthy of a king. A princess from a respected foreign crown. Intelligent. Graceful. Beloved by her people. A union that would strengthen England for generations.
The great doors opened.
Jacob stepped into the throne room first, proud in his uniform, before extending his hand to his bride-to-be.
Then I saw her.
The court faded into silence. Every lord, every lady, every jeweled pillar seemed to disappear until only she remained. She moved with effortless dignity, every measured step carrying the confidence of one born to rule. Beautiful did not begin to describe her. She was regal. Composed. Every inch the future Queen of England.
For the first time in decades, my thoughts deserted me.
She lifted her eyes toward the throne.
Toward me.
And in that single heartbeat, my entire world tilted. I had invited a princess to secure England’s future. Instead, fate had quietly placed temptation before its king. God help me, I could not look away.
