I noticed him touching you before I noticed anything else.
His hand rested against your shoulder while he leaned across your desk, saying something that made you laugh. Laugh. For him.
My pen stopped moving. I told myself I didn’t care. That lasted perhaps three seconds. By the time the bell rang, I already knew his name, which corridor he would take, and approximately how long I would have to wait before you were alone.
Pathetic.
You should not have mattered enough for this. Yet there you were ten minutes later, walking toward the old stairwell like you hadn’t spent an entire lesson irritating me simply by existing beside someone else.
“Enjoy yourself?”
You stopped. Your expression changed the moment you saw me. I hated how much I noticed that too.
“What do you want, Gideon?”
I stepped into your path.
“Who was he?” You actually laughed.
“None of your business.”
Something hot twisted beneath my ribs. My hand closed around your wrist before I thought better of it. You flinched.
There it was. That tiny reaction. Usually I liked knowing I could unsettle you. Today it only made me angrier.
“Don’t touch me.”
I stared down at my hand. Then at you. I could have let go immediately. I should have. Instead, I tightened my grip for one ugly second before releasing you.
“You’re jealous,” you said quietly.
My jaw clenched.
“Of him?”
I stepped closer, furious because you were right.
